I'm a bit of a Flickrite and one of the things I've always wanted to be able to do is to download all of the photos that I have flagged as 'faves' and then sync them to what ever PMP I happen to be loving at the time (Arhcos, N95, iPod Touch, PSP blah blah blah). I just found a little Java app that should do the trick - Flickr Faves
I'm looking foward to being able to inspire myself with loads of other people photos where ever I am, in the hope that it will raise my photographic game a bit...
Why not try it if you're a Flickr user? (Obviously you need a Java runtime enviroment)
I've started 'downloadr' instead. http://www.flickr.com/groups/api/discuss/169135/. Although it's obviously a bit fatter (.NET I presume) it's a lot more feature rich that Flickr Faves and includes the ability to download your own posts, other peoples posts and your faves.
OK. I had to do it. I couldn't resist the temptation to fiddle. So I unlocked my iPod touch (using this http://www.slovix.com/touchfree/ - so simple even a Vista user could do it).
Then I installed a ebook reader.
Then some themes.
Then a couple of games that used the accelleromter (pretty cool they are too - the accelerometer is much underutilised in Apples apps so far IMHO).
And then, well, I rolled it all back to a factory fresh state (with a 'restore' via itunes)
Stupid?
Prehaps, but the reason I bought an iPod and the reason I like it so much is becasue it's simple. It's a closed system for a reason and it does a couple of well scoped jobs very well, with a very well understood and defined set of requirements. I imagine Apple have had a clear view to it's intended mode of use that has obviously been part of the design from inception. The idea of taking such a carefully thought out and well executed solution and installing fifty kinds of GPL 0.0.1's IS JUST WRONG! (not that I have anything against free software mind you - it's everywhere software should be going).
When apple start releasing new apps, or facilitate vendors with an SDK and, most importantly, a certification program, well, then I might reconsider. Who understands the market into which the iPod touch (or iPhone) fits best? Me? Or Apple (who have sold over 110million iPods worldwide).
Or prehaps I'm just getting old?
I'm off now to reflash my coffe machine - a 13 year old has realeased a script kit that turns it into a teas maid and bread maker...
Well, since Friday evening I have:
- Got automatic transcoding of my Windows Vista Media Ultimate DVR-MS recordings to an iPod compatible format working using DVRMS toolbox with an ffmpeg action patch, and the all singing, all dancing, ffmpeg (what an amazing tool!)
- Read about, thought about and implimented a lab Microsoft DFS implimentaiton with replications - this is so cool. You can even define replicaiton bandwidth limits on a schedual! and its free!
- Eaten 2 cossiants in one sitting...
- Fallen completly in love with my iPod touch - such amazing attention to detail - makes microsofts UI efforts look a bit shabby to say to least! God only knows how many late nights went into this thing!
- Found out my car tax has expired, that I can't find the log book or policy document, and that it is time for a service. Bugger. I'll be spending a good hour tomrrow trying to explain myself on the phone to one of the helpful Welsh grannies at the DVLA.
- Found out that Apple have changed the video out specs of the iPod touch, only after buying a video out dock. Gits.
- Retired my Archos 604 & DVR station - ebaying it later.
- Failed to put my new tires on my bike. Nor even ride it. I am getting '30 something dad paunch' :-(
- Retired my iPod nano 2G - ebaying it later
- In-place upgraded 2 x win2k3 servers to R2 (amazingly easy process but watch out for SKU/channel limitiations)
- Dreamt about IT at least once - a horrible SAN dream again
- Bought my son a new Duplo rubbish bin lorry which he so adores he just woke up crying and complaining that he wanted to play with it...
<wipes brow and collapses backwards into sofa>
Got a new blog. It's about six months since I got rid of my old blog. I'm going to set a few rules with this one to make sure the content is actaully worth blogging. Rules to be decided...
